Reference Desk

The Reference Desk is located on 2 NORTH. Whether you just need to find a pencil sharpener, a quick statistic to flesh out a paper or are beginning the research phase of a theses for a Master's degree, this is the best place to start your research!

The Reference Desk is staffed by a combination of student assistants to service the computers and copiers, library assistants to answer directional and informational questions and professional librarians who can give you in depth research advice.

Librarians at CSUS are members of the faculty and work closely with the instructional faculty to ensure that the curriculum is supported with resources to enrich your educational endeavors. Each librarian has a Masters degree in Library Science and most also hold an additional subject Masters degree, such as an MBA. Click here to find out which librarian is the subject specialist in your major. They are the ones who select the books and are most familiar with the collections. Don't hesitate to ask for their advice on your topic. A few minutes consultation can save you lots of time on your research project. If things are too busy at the reference desk, request an individual appointment with one of the librarians whose name appears in the column on the left of the screen, or send an email by clicking on the name.

Reference Collection and Ready Reference

Behind the reference desk is a set of low shelves which contain the Ready Reference books. These are the books most often used by the librarians to answer questions relating to the subject fields on their floor. If you are given a reference book from the Ready Reference shelves, return it to the desk when you are finished.

The tall bookshelves marked "REFERENCE" which stand to the north of the reference desk contain encyclopedias, dictionaries, bibliographies, directories and other sorts of reference tools. Reference books, which are identified by the location "2 North Reference" EUREKA and by "r-e-f" on the book itself above the top line of the call number. They may not be checked out of the Library. Nearby are free library guides and handouts kept in rotating wooden kiosks. These handouts can be very helpful as they list the most useful research tools in any given subject, providing you with call numbers and locations.

Index Area and Research Stations

Periodical articles are indexed in a variety of paper indexes and abstracts which are grouped by topic on the index tables adjacent to the Reference Desk. Electronic access to many of the same journals is provided through the Library Home Page using the over 100 electronic databases.

Just as EUREKA is your key to finding call numbers for books, these paper periodical indexes and electronic databases are your key to finding citations to articles in magazines and journals, publications which are issued periodically.

The bulk of the web-based computers that the Library provides for your research needs are located on the second floor, adjacent to the Reference Desk.   You can go to the Database & Periodical Indexes for a list of these online resources.  To determine if the Library has access to a particular journal, either in paper or online, use the Locate Print & E-Journals.

The citations they provide include the author of the article, title of the article, then the title of the journal or magazine with its date, volume number and pages. You'll need all of that information to locate the article in this library and to include in your bibliography. Consult a Librarian for the indexes most useful for your topic.

We also provide electronic access to a variety of journals available in full-text. For an explanation see: Finding Full Text Articles.

Government Documents

Government Documents from the United States, California, Sacramento City and County, from Canada, and from the United Nations are located in the northwest corner of 2 NORTH. The United States government is the single largest publisher in the world, publishing materials on all subjects. Items found in EUREKA with the designation "Gov Docs" are found here. They are filed according to the Superintendent of Documents Classification System, know as SUDOC.

Atlas and Map Collections

The northeast corner of 2 NORTH behind the campus computer lab, contains our sizable atlas and map collections. Atlases are reference material and do not circulate. This collection contains world atlases, individual country atlases, historical atlases, scientific atlases as well as special theme atlases such as the California Water Atlas.

The Map Collections include individual city maps, topographic maps of the western states as well as relief maps and globes

Library Instruction

Library Instruction Lab, Room 2024

To help you learn more about the Library and how to do research for your papers, speeches and other research projects we offer a variety of classes and special instruction in rooms 2022, 2023 and 2024. The two labs are equipped for hands-on sessions demonstrate searching on EUREKA and other computer systems. CSUS faculty members may use on online request form to schedule library lectures especially designed to meet the research needs of particular class assignment. Individuals may also check at the second floor reference desk to see if any small group instruction sessions are being currently offered such as Demystifying Library Databases or Search Engine Strategies, or see an expanded list of instructional presentations when you visit the CSUS Library Instructional Services page.

UCCS Computer Lab

The main campus Computer Lab is located on 2 NORTH. This lab is staffed by student assistants from the University Computer Center and provides the standard services available from any campus lab. These include access to EUREKA, the Internet and World Wide Web, electronic mail via SacLink accounts, and word processing and other campus supported programs. As with all computer labs, access is restricted to CSUS students, faculty or staff and you must login with a SacLink account. This lab is the most popular on campus and often has lines of students awaiting the next available computer. Lab hours and other information for this and other labs can be found by visiting UCCS Lab Home Page.
